Starting your locs can be such an exciting adventure! You may be thinking about it incessantly or anxiously anticipating that special hair appointment. Sis, I’ve been there and I love my locs so much that I don’t see myself wearing loose natural hair anytime soon. Here is a list of the tell tale signs that you are ready to loc your hair!
1. You are thinking about locking your hair on a daily/weekly basis.
When you see your hair in the mirror, you are imagining how you would look with locs instead. You have already worn faux locs, kinky twists, and other “faux loc’d” styles that make you look good and feel good. As much as you love your loose natural hair, you are pretty much over it.
2. Your Pinterest board is popping and you follow all the loc’d beauties on Instagram
You heard me. You have been all over Instagram and Pinterest admiring all things loc related (make sure you follow me while you’re at it!). You are in awe of the different sizes, various lengths and textures. But ultimately, you are falling in love with the sight of locs on a variety of curly-haired women.
3. You stare at all the women in the grocery store with locs.
At times, you even make small talk with these women about how long they’ve been growing their locs or which loctician they use. The admiration you have for their hair allows for brief bonding and you enjoy it!
4. You are already subscribed to your favorite loc’d YouTubers.
You found your hair twin, and you are digesting as much information as you can about locs. You’ve read about growing them, caring for them, and how to enjoy the journey. Basically, you can’t get off of YouTube university.
5. You have trimmed your ends and your hair is thriving.
You are already making sure that you have a great foundation to begin the locking process. This is going to improve the appearance and health of your locs and you are not willing to skip this step.
6. You’ve already dyed your hair.
You wisely decided to color your loose natural hair before locking your hair since you know you will not be able to color it in the beginning stages of your locs. You’ve been conditioning as well, making sure to take good care of those colored ends (especially if you used bleached to lift your natural color).
7. You are here reading this post!
You may have found this article on either Pinterest or Google. Wherever you found this, it means you were doing your research! This could be a strong indicator that you are ready.
You may be displaying all of these signs of being ready to loc your hair, but still desire to wait a while before doing so. This is totally fine and I actually encourage this. As exciting as it is to start locs on your hair, it is still a long-term commitment and will require you to jump with both feet in. Ultimately, I believe that only you will know exactly when you are ready to begin your locs!
These are the signs ladies! Did I miss any? Let me know in the comments.
