Becoming a sisterlocks consultant was such an awesome career shift for me. I was already 4 years into my own loc journey with traditional locs, and I had already completely fallen in love with the loc’d community.
One day while at a birthday celebration (at a beautiful winery in VA), I got into an awesome conversation with a friend about her gorgeous, back-length sisterlocks.
As we spoke, she mentioned that she was also a sisterlocks consultant. It was something she did on the side while pursuing her master’s degree. Talk about impressive!
I loved how she had a great source of income while still having the flexibility to pursue other things. If my memory serves me, I believe I registered just a few weeks later!
Now without further ado, here are the steps to becoming a sisterlocks consultant (or trainee).

Step 1: Sisterlocks Work Space
Firstly, start to think about where you will service your clients. Do you have a private dedicated space in your home? Will you rent a salon suite? Do you already work in a salon? Whatever you choose, make sure you prioritize client comfort.
Step 2: Sisterlocks Registration
Next, you will need to go to the official sisterlocks website, where you will need to register and choose training dates. As of 2021, the sisterlocks classes have transitioned from the former training model of 4 days, to a hybrid course consisting of 19 hours of online training (including a 3hr session on Zoom) and 16 hours (2 days) of in-person training.
Once you find the location that is the best fit for you, go ahead and register on the sisterlocks website.
Side note – there is a $375 non-refundable deposit requirement. They also have very strict attendance and rescheduling policies, so in an effort to not waste any of your coins, just make sure you can commit to the dates you choose.
Step 3: Reservations for Training
Once you have registered, mark your calendar and make any hotel reservations necessary to attend the 2-day 16 hr long training. Depending on how close you live to the training site, some students may need to stay in a hotel or even an Airbnb for the duration of the training.
You will begin your online training two weeks prior to your in-person training, so make sure to have flexibility in your schedule for that (this portion is self-paced).
Step 4: Sisterlocks Materials
Purchase the materials! Here is the list of items your will need for the course:
Step 5: Sisterlocks Connections
While taking the course, it’s a great idea to connect with your classmates. You will meet women from all walks of life taking this course, including moms who just want to maintain their daughters’ locs, locticians that have been in the loc game for decades, and even women who just want to maintain their own locs themselves.
I enjoy talking/meeting new people so connecting with classmates came naturally for me, but if this is not the case for you, no worries. As you are learning and practicing various skills during the training, go ahead and chat with your neighbor (or whoever you sit next to in class), and swap information.
This was especially helpful for me because I still reach out and connect with my classmates for various reasons and it’s been a blessing.
Upon completing the course, request to join the exclusive sisterlocks trainee/certified consultants group on FB, this will help you tremendously as you begin taking on clients.
Step 6: Get Business Started as a Sisterlocks Consultant
Lastly, once you successfully complete the course, go ahead and start your business!
Designate your working hours for the week (part-time or full-time), create an automated way for clients to book appointments, create a neat and clean workspace, and advertise your work!
Once you have completed a certain number of heads, you may consider pursuing your Sisterlocsk certification if it’s a good fit for you and your business.
That’s it! The process is quite simple, and you will learn so much! As long as you are willing to practice, you can operate as a successful Sisterlocks consultant in no time.
The neat thing about Sisterlocks, is that it gives kinky hair the freedom and flexibility that most women never dreamed they could have without further processing. Women who have Sisterlocks begin discovering just how beautiful their natural hair is.”
